ABOUT THE PROJECT
Where will your project take place? (please include city/village too)
City of Montrose
Anticipated project launch date
September 10, 2023
Briefly describe your project idea including your role and any project partners.
The City of Montrose would work with local artist Tyler Hayes to create cohesive designs for four (4) reinforced fiberglass 35″x36″ x 36″ planters in the the Montrose downtown along M-57/State Street. These designs would then be a paint by number project partnering with local and non-profits groups.
How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The microgrant would cover the cost of 4 reinforced fiberglass planters that are 36″x36″x36″ in size at a cost of $4,591 including shipping. Paint and supplies would be $400 including paint, brushes, etc. Lead artist stipend would $800. Soil, flowers would provided by the DDA at cost of $400.
Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding.
No

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Why does your community need this project?
The City of Montrose and the Montrose DDA is taking steps to improve its small downtown. Recent developments including two fires in the downtown in the last 15 years that has created a cycle of disinvestment leaving many vacant buildings. If funded the project would compliment the current improvements that the DDA has undertaken including a facade program, pole banners and hanging flower pots. These planters could be a focal point to create a sense of small town pride.. The lead artist would be tasked with creating a cohesive design and inviting residents, local groups and non-profits to add their touch through a paint by number process. These planters would then be filled with flowers to bring a sense of vibrancy to the downtown.
How will you engage your community in this project?
I will reach out to a various groups including Montrose Community Schools, Montrose Township Senior Center (city residents use their services), members of the DDA and Chamber of Commerce, Blueberry Festival Committee and any other groups or residents that are interested.. I will engage through Facebook posting, DDA website, flyers and press releases as well as directly approaching these organizations.
What do you hope to achieve through this project?
This project is to create a functional community created art installation. My hope is this can be just one part in reimagining and redefining downtown community spaces while bring a diverse group of residents and organizations to create a sense of ownership and place.
How will the project celebrate the community’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
The project would utilize volunteers from the community including Montrose Community Schools, Montrose Senior Center, elected officials and any resident wishing to participate in the paint by number and planting activities. It would bring a various age, socio-economic statuses and abilities for a community art project.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.
Members of the Montrose DDA and Montrose City Council would donate time. The City would provide the venue for painting, installation and stipend for the artist. The Montrose high school National Honor Society will plant flowers. Flowers and soil would be purchased by the DDA.
