Why does your community need this project?

The Highland Downtown Development Authority (HDDA) Board realizes we have an incredibly important role to play in the health of our businesses and the culture of our downtown. Consistent with the HDDA’s strategic objective of enhancing public space for people to connect and gather, we have launched a Public Art & Mural Program. This program fosters the revitalization of Downtown Highland by improving the visual appearance of downtown buildings and structures and brings art to unexpected places.

What do you hope to achieve through this project?

The HDDA will help reimagine and reinvent public and green spaces in Downtown Highland through a Place Making Initiative.
• Viewed by 30,000 cars daily/ 10,680,000 yearly
• Create additional reasons for our community to live and shop in Downtown Highland
• Build public excitement for Downtown Highland through visual arts
• Improve the overall appearance of the Downtown
• Increase local pride in Downtown Highland

How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant?

Mural Installation Totals as follows: $37,545.00 for entire center median, west and east faces of concrete including tunnels perpendicular to M59
Vegetation removal estimate by Precision Tree and Shrub Services, INC. Removal and Cleanup Total: $3,970.00
Total Project/Program Budget $41,515.00

What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.

HDDA is leading this project and has committed funds necessary to complete the mural installation. The HDDA is partnering with and has committed support from Highland’s Board, Library, HVCA, businesses, and residents. We have a local Artist scheduled and we have a very visual place for the mural.

Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding. *
