Why does your community need this project?
The City of Montrose and the Montrose DDA is taking steps to improve its small downtown. Recent developments including two fires in the downtown in the last 15 years has created a cycle of disinvestment leaving many vacant buildings. If funded the project would compliment the current improvements that the DDA has undertaken including a facade program, pole banners and hanging flower pots. These planters could be a focal point to create a sense of small town pride.. The lead artist would be tasked with creating a cohesive design and inviting residents, local groups and non-profits to add their touch through a paint by number process. These planters would then be filled with flowers to bring a sense of vibrancy to the downtown.
What do you hope to achieve through this project?
This project is to create a functional community created art installation. My hope is this can be just one part in reimagining and redefining downtown community spaces while bring a diverse group of residents and organizations to create a sense of ownership and place.
How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant?
The microgrant would cover the cost of 4 reinforced fiberglass planters that are 36″x36″ at a cost of $4,591. $9279 per planter plus shipping. Paint and supplies would be $400. That would include brushes, paint and related items. Lead artist would be a volunteer.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.
Members of the Montrose DDA and Montrose City Council would donate time. The lead artist would also donate time and expertise. The City would provide the venue and actual installation and the high school National Honor Society will plant flowers. Flowers and soil would be purchased by the DDA.
Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding. *
