How will you be involved in this project? Who will you worth with?
For this mural project, members of the community will be painting the mural. The City of Monroe and PLNTING SEEDS will be partnering with local schools and the City’s Tot Lot program to. The artist will outline the mural and use a “paint-by-numbers” system to allow students and community members to complete the project. By offering a hands-on way to be involved, a sense of pride and ownership will be instilled within the community.

Why does your community need this project?
Boyd Park is located within the downtown residential area and is adjacent to one of the thoroughfares of the City. The current design is a gray, concrete stair-type structure that appears unfinished and out of place within the park. The sidewalk passes along the structure making it very visible and one of the first things visitors entering the park from the south side see.
Painting the structure would be a great improvement to the park. It would improve the aesthetic for visitors, neighbors and those visiting the downtown area. The mural would demonstrate the commitment the City has to investing in the community and would showcase City pride to visitors.
What do you hope to achieve through this project?
The project will have the potential to impact the community in a number of ways. As stated, the location of the park is the residential downtown area, the installation of the mural will improve the visual characteristics of the park for the neighborhood and for visitors.
Additionally, the mural would increase awareness of the park for residents and visitors. Boyd Park is one of the few “fenced-in” parks within the City and is a great option for families with younger children. Increased awareness for visitors would also be beneficial as there are a number of dining options within walking distance where people would be able to carryout food or coffee from a local business and enjoy it in the park.
The mural would also instill a sense of pride for residents and community members. Those who assist in painting the mural will have a sense of ownership and pride with the completed work, along with the sense community that was a part of the creation. Once investment in shown within an area, many times property owners will increase their investment to their own property as well.
How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant?
The grant will be used to purchase supplies such as paint and brushes, along with fees for the artists’ time and development of concept.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.
The City of Monroe has partnered with PLNTING SEEDS and an artist for the design and execution of the project. City staff time will serve as in-kind for the purpose of developing the project.
Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding. *
