In our DDA District on Railroad Viaduct over M59, Highland, MI 48357

Briefly describe your project idea:

We are ready to install our 2nd mural in our DDA district, as a gateway to our Downtown. M59 is a major thoroughfare that splits our business district into north and south and a mural will define when you are entering our Downtown. I’m on the Design committee that is working on this project.

How will you be involved in this project? Who will you worth with?

Our community is currently engaged because of the 1st mural we completed October 2022 and we will keep them up to date with our social media posts and township newsletter. We will be publicly launching this project in May and will be looking for public feedback. We have a Design committee that will present recommendations of the actual art to the DDA Board and we welcome public comments.

Describe the artist’s or artists’ work. This is not about credentials—what do they do as an artist?

Zach creates dynamic pieces that burst with color and energy. His preferred mediums are acrylics and spray paint, which allow him to work quickly and experiment with different techniques.

Why does your community need this project?

Consistent with the HDDA’s strategic objective of enhancing public space for people to connect and gather, we have launched a Public Art & Mural Program. This program fosters the revitalization of Downtown Highland by improving the visual appearance of downtown buildings and structures and brings art to unexpected places. This mural will act as a gateway by letting people know they have entered Highland’s Downtown. The HDDA will continue to help reimagine and reinvent public and green spaces in DT Highland through this Place Making Initiative. Which in turn, will create additional reasons for our community and visitors to live and shop DT Highland, build public excitement for DT Highland through visual arts, improve the overall appearance of the DT, and increase pride in DT Highland. Our plan is that future murals and artwork will be installed, over time, throughout DT Highland on buildings, structures and in public spaces, creating a streetscape “gallery” of public art.

What do you hope to achieve through this project?

We hope this program fosters the revitalization of DT Highland by improving the visual appearance of DT buildings and structures and brings art to unexpected places. This is a place making initiative that will put Highland’s DT on the map and in turn, will increase the health of our businesses and the culture of our DT. Our goal over time is to add future murals and art pieces throughout DT Highland on buildings, structures and in public spaces, creating a streetscape “gallery” of public art. All of this will improve the overall appearance of our DT, increase local pride in DT Highland, help build public excitement, and increase numbers of people that want to live and shop in DT Highland, in turn helping our businesses thrive. This mural will be viewed by 30,000 cars daily along the M59 thoroughfare.

How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant?

Specifically, we will put the $5000 towards the installation of the mural. Our project has a total budget of $41,515.
Art Installation Totals as follows:
5006 Sq/Ft – $37,545.00 Entire Center Median, West and East faces of concrete including tunnels perpendicular to M59

Vegetation Removal Estimate by Precision Tree and Shrub Services, INC.
Removal and Cleanup Total: $3,970.00

What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.

We have a local artist that completed our 1st mural, a Committee that is finalizing the design to recommend to the HDDA Board, a local tree company ready to remove vegetation before the installation of the mural, a working partnership with our local art council, we are using an existing structure.

Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding. *

Yes
