ABOUT THE PROJECT

Where will your project take place? (please include city/village too)

City of Scottville

Anticipated project launch date

October 2, 2023

Briefly describe your project idea including your role and any project partners.

Scottville DDA has undertaken a collaborative effort to revitalize a park space within our downtown area. The project includes a sculpture from a local artist that is to be placed on the grounds and bring Scottville onto the Mason County Sculpture Trail.

How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.

The plan for this Grant Award would be to use the funding to help with the cost of the sculpture and it’s placement on the park grounds.

Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding.

No

Rachel’s Notes about the Project

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

Why does your community need this project?

The park is located within 150 meters of south main street and will bring all users of the park into contact with local store fronts. The additional public use of the park is estimated at over 15,000 users annually. The economic impact of that traffic to downtown businesses is substantial. The loss of use of this park space by the public and community has been highly detrimental to the small businesses in the city that rely on the additional revenue created by visitors to the area. The opportunity and plan to bring back events and use of the park will provide a direct impact on all businesses in Scottville.

How will you engage your community in this project?

Project planning is currently nearing completion. This park space and art component has been collaborated on by the Mason County Center for the Arts. This project and it’s community space will directly engage all City and out county residents with outdoor art and also park space for community activities.

What do you hope to achieve through this project?

Community gathering space that is accessible to all. Currently the outdoor park space has no accessibility for those with limited mobility. Included in our plan is concrete pathways that will allow access to all members of the community to this public space. The addition of the City of Scottville to the Mason County Sculpture Trail is a specific Goal of this project.

How will the project celebrate the community’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.

Public outdoor space for all ages and all abilities is the goal for the project. The sculpture will be celebrating our local heritage, the Scottville Clown Band and agriculture roots of the community.

What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.

Collaborative partners for this project include…Scottville Optimist Club, Pennies From Heaven Foundation, Mason County Cultural Development, Ludington Area Jaycees, MCC Education Foundation, Scottville Clown Band, The Right Place and more. The Funds already raised total $235,000
