ABOUT THE PROJECT
Where will your project take place? (please include city/village too)
Benton Harbor
Anticipated project launch date
July 15, 2023
Briefly describe your project idea including your role and any project partners.
My name is James Galbraith and I am a small business owner in Benton Harbor, MI. With your help we would be able to install an art piece that wraps around the restaurant that showcases the Arts District and its roots. Years ago this area was a huge fruit market and we would like to paint its history
How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The grant money would go directly to shading the area and painting a wrap around mural on the busiest round about in our downtown area.
Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding.
No

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Why does your community need this project?
This community is having a renaissance after years of struggle and we would love to showcase its rich history.
How will you engage your community in this project?
This art installation will be a center focus for the new neighborhood. We are becoming a destination and would love to add to the vibrant community and display its rich history for visitors to enjoy.
What do you hope to achieve through this project?
We hope to expand the radius of our small arts district. This mural will encourage more foot traffic and give the community a place to sit and eat outside as well. There are many local business in our downtown area and very few outdoor seating areas.
How will the project celebrate the community’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
The goal of this mural will be to depict our flourishing neighborhood of the past in the midst of our economical growth. Pictures of its history will be the main focus. With an emphasis on the art of our farmers.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.
This grant will not be able to cover the total amount of our project but it will be able to help with a large portion. The property owner along with myself will also be putting in all that we can. Working with a local artist as well to make this installation possible. And hopefully your help as well
