This one day conference from 10 AM to 4 PM will provide a safe and productive space and conversation for young ladies 10- 14 years old to engage and be educated on the Caribbean community here in Metro Detroit. It will also address ancestral connection to the Caribbean, where we are today and how this prepares them for the future. .
How will you engage your community in this project?
We will market to the great Metro Detroit area parents from the Caribbean and other immigrants and long time residents to engage and register there young ladies. We will also do outreach with other immigrant centric organizations to encourage them to have their young ladies attend. We will work with The Haitian Network Group of Detroit and other local Caribbean organizations and individuals to get storytellers, creatives and elders to provide authentic conversation.
How will the project celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
The Caribbean and Caribbean American voices will be elevated to show the young ladies how long we have been a part of the fabric of Detroit and what growth looks like through our lenses. It will also utilize the voices of our elders, creatives, professionals, advocates and others from our collectives community to empower the young ladies through the concept, “if you see them, you can be them”. This will allow us to create tangible legacy by engaging our whole community.
How do you plan to spend the $1,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The budget for this event is $5,000. We would use the $1,ooo to offset the cost of lunch and the artist fee for Ralph Taylor from Caribbean Mardi Gras Production who will be presenting on the history of Caribbean Carnival and the making of headdress workshop.
Will your project require special permits?
No
Are you the owner of the property where the project/event will occur?

ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S NEEDS
Why does your neighborhood need this project?
It will allow us the highlight and celebrate a community culture that has been visible invisible.
What do you hope to achieve through this project? Be as specific as possible!
We hope to create cultural sensitive conversation for a community that has been here in Detroit since the 1800s but are still not seen or celebrated outside of our community. It will also encourage our young people to celebrate their unique space and give their parents and elders grace when we do cultural activities and need their involvement
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more.
We have moderators for the sessions, speakers and caterer. We have a planning committee that sole focus is to make this event a success. We also have access to small business to get financial support to offset the cost of the event. In addition we have the tables and chairs, audio visual equipment and T-shirts donation.
