ABOUT THE PROJECT

What is the name of the neighborhood where the project will take place? (Please include city/village name too. Example: Mexican Town, Detroit)

Grandmont Rosedale, Detroit

Anticipated project launch date

October 7, 2023

Describe your project idea including: a) Is it a project or event? b) What will you do? c) Where will you do it? d) Who, if any, are your project partners?

A Night at The Coloring Museum is a creative space for residents to interact with art by coloring transitional wall murals focusing on the positive representation of minorities while learning about local artists who created the murals. Creative endeavors like coloring are known to have many beneficial effects, including stress and anxiety reduction. This event will take place in the Grandmont Rosedale Grand River Workplace working with the Grandmont Rosedale Community Association.

How will you engage your community in this project?

I will market the event on social media showing my community, via reels, how fun it is to color on the walls by coloring my own murals. An oldie but goodie, coloring has never gone out of style. To elevate the coloring experience from a piece of paper, this event will excite every one of all ages to perform a “forbidden childhood act”, coloring on the walls! We will encourage adults to explore their inner child and inspire youth by showing them that art can be created in various mediums using different platforms and surfaces. This project is a collaborative effort by the community to help make the space more colorful by providing washable crayons and markers. To keep the engagement going, we will ask patrons to record videos and take selfie photos to post on their social media with #thecoloringmuseum.

How will the project celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.

Did you know, that new minority artists struggle to gain exposure and build their clientele because art shows fees are too high and galleries want up to 50% of their sales? Social media isn’t always effective because of the algorithm, and new content creators can be overlooked. My pop-up event is an opportunity for minority artists to be celebrated and recognized for their uniqueness and artistic style. Murals are trending across the country, specifically in major cities like Detroit. The Coloring Museum pop-up is a reflection of the mural movement and goes beyond it by allowing everyone in the community to participate in creating art. I also want to help jump-start new minority artists’ careers by providing a space to share their work with the community, while helping patrons overcome daily stressors through this therapeutic and fun activity.

How do you plan to spend the $1,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.

The microgrant will be used to purchase supplies such as:
– Paint and coloring supplies ($300)
– Building material for movable walls ($700)

Will your project require special permits?

No

Are you the owner of the property where the project/event will occur?

No Please provide a letter of support from the owner of that property.

Rachel’s Notes

Confirmed member status. Confirmed social accounts. Confirmed artist/applicant. This is a “pop up” event done by an individual who owns a business doing this. Does take place in a neighborhood.

Additional info as requested by internal jury: “I’m seeking at least three artists from southeast Michigan, including myself–four artists total. The artists and I will paint black and white murals on the movable walls. Each artist will have their own wall. Once the murals are completed, patrons will color the murals with washable crayons and markers. At the end of each day, the wall will be cleaned for more patrons to participate and color on the walls the next day. This is an interactive exhibit.

I am well connected in the Metro-Detroit area. I’m a graduate of the College for Creative Studies and have worked for Community Arts Partnerships. I also have a rapport with Design Core which is another non-profit of CCS. I will use my resources including social media to do a call for artists to participate in this activity. The theme for this event will be “I’m from Detroit, where____”. Artists will have to compose a mural that aligns with the theme in their creative style.

There will be four walls in total and the material includes drywall, primer paint, screws, wood, and casters. Each wall will be 5’x7′. “

Additional info from applicant on scope change: “There is a change of venue for “A Night at The Coloring”. Chelsea Salame from the Grandmont Rosedale Association, who is added to this email, highly suggested that I host the event at our neighborhood gallery Norwest Gallery, which is a few blocks away from the Grand River Workplace. The gallery is a much larger space and it fits the event theme. Fortunately, Asia Hamilton, the owner of the gallery, agreed to host the event. Also, I have already recruited one artist, Phil Simpson from the Smile brand. Attached is the letter of support. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.”

ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S NEEDS

Why does your neighborhood need this project?

Grandmont Rosedale is starving for more creative events, especially events that support the (fine) arts. Young minorities that aspire to be artists need more representation in the community. The Coloring Museum pop-up is a twist on how you can take an everyday hobby and transform it into a career.

What do you hope to achieve through this project? Be as specific as possible!

I hope that local minority artists that participate in this event get more exposure, commission job opportunities, and a larger social media following.

What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more.

I have received a grant from Grandmont Rosedale SOUP pitch competition winning ($1,800) first place for The Coloring Museum. My father who is a licensed contractor/carpenter will be helping me build the movable walls that the artists will paint their murals on.
