Canfield Consortium is partnering with Sidewalk Detroit for their bi-annual Sidewalk Festival. We were chosen to open the month long festival. and plan to install a community name sign to commemorate the event. We will work with two local artists, a muralist and a poet to create a one of a kind unveiling experience. The muralist will create a unique way to inscribe our community’s name on a location decided by community members. The poet will write a dedication poem focused on our community
How will you engage your community in this project?
Yes, the community will be engaged in this project. Feed back from participating residents will determine where where the name commemoration will be.
How will the project celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
Our community is illustrative of what happens when funding and resources are reduced and the quality of life suffers. We are also an example of a community coming together to rebuild, preserve its culture and celebrate the resiliency and pride of commuting members. The project will celebrate our resiliency, be a beacon on hope and serve as a reminder of the power of community led development.
How do you plan to spend the $1,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The $1,000 will be spent on supplies and artists fees.
We plan to use an existing surface (wall, fence or sidewalk/street) and will need money for paint and brushes.
We also plan to provide the participating artists with stipends for their time and work
Will your project require special permits?
No
Are you the owner of the property where the project/event will occur?
Rachel’s Notes
Reviewed on 4.11.23 Confirmed member status. Confirmed org status https://www.canfieldconsortium.org/. They own the property so no letter of support needed.
Appears that Sidewalk Festival will come to their neighborhood, so it is neighborhood based https://www.sidewalkdetroit.com/sidewalk-festival.
Update from applicant regarding community engagement: “We had three sites in mind but to streamline the installation, residents will provide feedback on the type sign/mural rather than than the site. We’ve been advised that site control is an important component of a sign/mural installation and believe involving residents in what is seen along the East Canfield corridor will have more of a community impact.”
ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S NEEDS
Why does your neighborhood need this project?
For so long our neighborhood did not have a name. We would describe our neighborhood by is proximity to other neighborhoods or markers. In 2019, after working with the City and a series of community meetings & polls. we adopted the name East Canfield Village. This project will announce our name.
What do you hope to achieve through this project? Be as specific as possible!
We hope to install a sense of pride in our community and solidify the community’s name while highlighting our work over the past several years. Much attention is paid to renovations being done in well funded neighborhoods but community led development continues to be overlooked. This project will celebrate our work and the perseverance of residents who did not leave but believed in the promise our the community’s resurgence.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more.
We already have an investment for the Hudson-Weber Foundation for the Sidewalk Festival. We will also partner with several community partners including, Eastside Community Network, The Barack Obama Leadership Academy, Norwest Gallery and the City of Detroit who will contribute funds, man hours. We have a community cleaned up scheduled ahead of the festival that aims to get residents invested in the success of the event. SideWalk Detroit has led and hosted the Sidewalk Festival event that celebrates public space with an emphasis is on public art, cultural programming and deep engagement with community members. With there guidance and support, we are certain this will be a successful project
