ABOUT THE PROJECT
What is the name of the neighborhood where the project will take place? (Please include city/village name too. Example: Mexican Town, Detroit)
Eastside Neighborhood, Lansing
Anticipated project launch date
July 22, 2023
Describe your project idea including: a) Is it a project or event? b) What will you do? c) Where will you do it? d) Who, if any, are your project partners?
We will paint the pedestrian crosswalks at neighborhood road intersections with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. This project requires planning and coordination, culminating in one or two days of painting and celebrating. The crosswalks will have large-scale brightly colored designs and clear white lines delineating the crosswalk space. Walking across colorful crosswalks empowers pedestrians with a sense of belonging and slows traffic on the roads. Our project partners are detailed below.
How will you engage your community in this project?
Community members who have helped on past projects will be contacted to help, as well as folks who have expressed interest in joining. Yard signs will be placed at planned painting locations prior to painting events to alert residents of the project and allow new folks the opportunity to reach out and participate. On the day(s) of painting volunteers will help prepare the road surface using leaf blowers to remove debris. They will then direct traffic, paint the roadway, move traffic cones and supplies, and interact with interested community members passing by.
How will the project celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
We believe our neighborhood sidewalks should be safe places for all. Some of our residents are from races and cultures that have been profiled and discriminated against for simply being present in public spaces. We hope that by bringing care and attention to the streets we are sending a message to all, including enforcement personnel, that our neighborhood values belonging and our sidewalks and roads are places where people belong. Some of our residents can not afford personal vehicles, with this project we hope to show that the crosswalk space is also for them. With this project we show that our community respects our shared space and we encourage each other to exist with ease.
How do you plan to spend the $1,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The funds will all go towards the purchase of good quality materials. We hope to apply two coats of long lasting road paint. The paint we plan to purchase is Sealmaster Liquid Thermoplastic. The cost is $180 for 5 gallons. We estimate 20 gallons per crosswalk intersection (four crossings), this budgets for two coats of paint. We would like to paint two intersections: $180/5 gallons x 8 = $1,440 for 40 gallons of paint.
Will your project require special permits?
No
Are you the owner of the property where the project/event will occur?
No Please provide a letter of support from the owner of that property.

Update from Jill regarding online voting: “Thanks for sending this information. Thanks for your understanding.”
ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S NEEDS
Why does your neighborhood need this project?
People living in the eastside neighborhood are harmed by speeding traffic along our residential streets. Based on results from street painting projects in other places, asphalt art is an effective method for improving the protection of vulnerable roadway users and slowing traffic.
What do you hope to achieve through this project? Be as specific as possible!
We hope to:
* Foster a welcoming community and improve the safety of public spaces in our neighborhood.
* Encourage others in Lansing and beyond to do projects like this in their communities.
* Show our local government that we care about the people currently living in this community and that projects like this make an impact on the well-being of residents and should be supported.
Crash data for the neighborhood will be reviewed from prior years to serve as a baseline. Subsequent crash data will be checked at the end of this year to quantify the impact of crosswalk paintings in our neighborhood. Comments from residents will be collected on the day(s) of project painting, and signs will be posted after the project to encourage others to provide feedback. The feedback from residents will be presented to the mayor’s office and city council to encourage the development of a city wide toolkit or initiative to help other groups of neighbors paint their crosswalks.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more.
* We have a process worked out and a design team that has successfully completed crosswalk paintings at five intersections in our community.
* We have a good base of volunteers that have helped with other projects, and a good number of other folks who have expressed interest.
* We have worked with and continue to have the support of the community, the Eastside Neighborhood Organization (ENO), and the Lansing public works department.
* We have received grant funds from the Greater Lansing Arts Council and the League of Michigan Bicyclists this year, and the Arts Council from previous years.
