Project Location:

McLaughlin, Muskegon

Briefly Describe Your Project Idea:

We will bring in a mural artist to help design the people and images that will be painted onto the new fence that will be installed around the McLaughlin Community Park, a piece of property which is leased from the City of Muskegon and for which the McLaughlin Neighborhood Association has the responsibility of maintaining and developing. The project partners are the Moore’s who own the fence, participants on a summer day camp held at the McLaughlin Community Park, and neighbors.

Why does your community need this project?

The McLaughlin Community Park is the only park within the McLaughlin neighborhood and since the McLaughlin Neighborhood Association began maintaining and developing the property, it has become a gathering place for the neighborhood. And, beauty is need in this location.

What do you hope to achieve through this project?

We hope to achieve a sense of belonging and pride through this project. I heard it said that the poor need beauty as much as they need bread because they live with so much ugliness and the painted fence at the McLaughlin Community Park adds beauty. And, it is something that makes the McLaughlin Community Park stand out from other parks. In addition, with the revitalization that is taking place in the business district of Muskegon focus is needed on neighborhoods.
