ABOUT THE PROJECT

Where will your project take place? (please include city/village too)

City of Coopersville

Anticipated project launch date

July 26, 2023

Briefly describe your project idea including your role and any project partners.

Music on Main will take place place a couple of times a month, bringing a different genre of music to the downtown corridor each time. The mission is to bring the community together and celebrate what we have. Rotary of Coopersville will pay for the musicians and Coopersville DDA will manage it.

How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.

With the $5,000 we plan to purchase a portable stage for the events that we would be able to use for multiple years. The stages we have cost estimates for range from $6,000 to $10,000. The Coopersville DDA would cover the balance of the cost.

Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding.

Yes

Rachel’s Notes about the Project

Confirmed member status. Confirmed business locations. Confirmed LOS. Confirmed creative element. Musicians will be paid but not by this funding.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

Why does your community need this project?

Our community needs to see what there is available in our downtown corridor as well as a reason to come together. Like many communities we were negatively impacted over the last few years and our downtown really is struggling because of this. In the past we had these events and they were enjoyed by a large genre of people. Music on Main events will welcome all people to the downtown corridor and have something for everyone. We believe that this will ignite a common goal passion in people, to build our community together. Because we all have a common thread to bring us together and that’s where we live.

How will you engage your community in this project?

The community will be invited to sit an enjoy the music, visit the retail businesses and food establishments and there will be a section set up for people with home business retail to showcase what they have available.

What do you hope to achieve through this project?

We hope to create a happy and welcoming environment that brings people of all backgrounds together in one space. By offering the different genres of music we believe each time more people will attend each time and come back because they felt a sense of belonging.

How will the project celebrate the community’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.

Different genres of musicians are hired for each event, which is known to bring out a huge diversity of people. The event is free for people to attend which takes away the economic status.

What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.

Rotary Club of Coopersville will be paying for the musicians which totals $12,500 for this year. The Coopersville DDA Board members will help facilitate the event and cover the marketing costs, roughly $1,000. The downtown retail businesses have agreed to remain open during these events.
