ABOUT THE PROJECT

Downtown Plymouth Michigan
Anticipated project launch date
October 15, 2023
Briefly describe your project idea including your role and any project partners.
The Plymouth DDA is working with artist Lisa Littell to transform an old storage area in our Central Parking Deck into a mural that will greet visitors as they park. The mural will be adjacent to our current Plymouth Art Walk and will further activate and enhance the unused area.
How do you plan to spend the $5,000 microgrant? Please list and explain the items, services, fees, expertise, etc. that you plan to purchase.
The microgrant will be used in its entirety for the artists renderings, materials and work on the project.
Will your project require special permits from the community you are in? For example, anything that requires a street closure or installing a permanent art piece will likely require a special permit from your local governing body or zoning board. If your project is funded, the MML Foundation is happy to help you navigate that process. Please note that all applicants must obtain any necessary permits for their projects, if selected for funding.
No

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Why does your community need this project?
The Plymouth DDA Board has identified a lack of art in our downtown business district and has been working on initiatives to increase the artistic offerings, especially in unused areas of the downtown.
How will you engage your community in this project?
Although we have a design chosen for the background of the mural, the DDA plans to engage our businesses, residents and visitors to help choose relevant landmarks that should be included on the mural. After activation, the DDA plans to host a selfie contest in front of the mural where visitors will be able to win gift cards from local merchants.
What do you hope to achieve through this project?
We hope to continue to activate unused areas of the downtown to promote the diverse artistic culture of Plymouth and our surrounding communities. One of the DDA’s 5-year strategic plan goals/tasks is to “improve ambiance and business engagement via artwork” and this project will complete this strategic goal task.
How will the project celebrate the community’s diversity? Diversity can include different ages, races, cultures, socio-economic statuses, abilities, and more.
This project is intended to engage more of our youth to create fun spaces to create social media selfies, TikTok posts and YouTube videos. We hope this project will create a background for magical content creation.
What resources do you already have to make this project successful? Resources could include things like time, partners, expertise, donated goods/materials/space, matching funds, and more. Please approximate the in-kind value if possible.
The DDA/City of Plymouth owns the space that we will be using for the mural. The DDA intends to spend up to $5,000 above what the grant wouldn’t cover for the project. DDA staff will also be spending time promoting the unveiling and using the mural for future contests.
