Lincoln Park, Elk Rapids Officials Awarded Scholarships

with No Comments

Thanks to our generous donors, officials from Lincoln Park and the Village of Elk Rapids have been awarded the Tim Doyle Scholarship that will cover the costs to participate in an upcoming Michigan Municipal League training for recently elected local officials.

They were selected by the MML Foundation to attend an Elected Officials Academy Core Weekender training May 3-4 in Traverse City. The seminar will broaden their knowledge on financial management, leadership skills, legal issues, planning and zoning, and other municipal-related topics. The recipients are:

  • Lylian Ross, Lincoln Park councilwoman
  • Gerard Knoph, Village of Elk Rapids trustee

“As elected officials, education is vital when casting votes on resolutions that will impact our communities for years to come,” Ross said. “A knowledgeable councilmember makes an effective member of city government. Education is an asset and an ongoing process. As elected officials, we must be able to communicate with residents, voters, city employees and other elected officials.”

Knoph called education the backbone of all good decisions.

“Elected officials have the responsibility to make important decisions that affect the future of their community,” he said. “As community leaders It is important for elected officials to not only educate themselves but also their constituents about the decisions they are facing.”

Tim Doyle

The Tim Doyle Scholarship Fund helps provide access to the most critical information for newly elected officials through the Elected Officials Academy (EOA) Core Weekender seminar. The scholarship was created in honor of Tim Doyle, who passed away in early 2008. Doyle was a councilmember in Durand, an EOA board member, and an ardent supporter of elected officials training. His wife, Deb Doyle, is a past League president, former EOA board member, and current mayor of the city of Durand. The EOA board resolved that Tim Doyle be honored through this educational scholarship program.

You, too, can give local elected officials the tools they need to identify, develop, and implement strategies that will grow and strengthen Michigan’s communities. Consider making a recurring gift today. Thank you!
